Getting Involved

Please join us. We are looking for volunteers!
Our program could not exist without our wonderful volunteers.  Dog or no dog, please join us! All potential volunteers will be interviewed prior to being accepted into the M.A.S.T. Program. If you are looking to involve your dog, your dog will also be a part of the interview. We require all volunteers to complete training as well as background checks. Volunteers will need to give M.A.S.T. the permission to run a background check. This information will be supplied to any partner locations which require it. Volunteers must abide by facility rules as well as M.A.S.T policies while volunteering.

As an added bonus: M.A.S.T. is recognized by the AKC so that certification with us allows your dog to be eligible for AKC titles.

We have two kinds of fun and rewarding volunteer opportunities:

1) Therapy Dog Handler

  • Requires you to have a dog.
  • Your dog must pass our 10-week training course as well as the M.A.S.T Therapy Dog Certification Program or TDI (Therapy Dogs International) Test.
  • We have 12 positions in every training class that are available on a first come, first served basis. Purchase the class in SHOP to pay the fee. This program includes 6 classes focused on obedience and 4 classes focused on therapy.
  • Dogs who pass the either the M.A.S.T. Therapy Dog Certification Program or Therapy Dogs International (TDI) test will then be eligible for therapy licensing and insurance. Insurance fees are paid by the Handler on a yearly basis.
  • Handlers and dogs visit with patients and staff at facilities. They promote the message about the value of M.A.S.T. dog programs.
  • We work in pairs/teams and never visit alone.
  • We follow M.A.S.T. policies but also the volunteer policies of the facilities we visit.
  • Many facilities require proof of a flu shot in order to volunteer. So it may be necessary for you to get a flu shot on file with M.A.S.T.

2) Assistant Handler

  • Does not require a dog.
  • May be required to handle different therapy dogs on visits or help handlers with their dogs.
  • We work in pairs and never visit alone. Assistant Handlers allow one Handler and therapy dog to enter a patient’s room on a visit as the second team member.
  • Promotes the message about the benefits and value of M.A.S.T.’s amazing programs.
  • We follow M.A.S.T. policies but also the volunteer policies of the facilities we visit.
  • Many facilities require proof of a flu shot in order to volunteer. So it may be necessary for you to get a flu shot on file with M.A.S.T.
